The theme of destructive love within relationships in older plays are very evident. Things have changed dramatically since the old days, but you can still find examples today that could be related into the themes that are still evident in todays readings of Shakespeare’s plays. Shakespeare s Macbeth and Bronte’s Wuthering Heights are presented through sexism, jealousy and betrayal. Now a days in current relationships women do have some sort of controlling power over men. Relationships have came a long ways since the Shakespearean era (1600s). In Macbeth there is an underlying theme of control from a woman. Lady Macbeth was the beloved wife to Macbeth and this was one of the main examples. In the days of Shakespeare and his novels, women were not equal to men such as they are nowadays. Women in the elizabethan era were not as high rank or thought of as men were, they were honorable, courageous and heroic. Men and women nowadays have the same problems even though we are an equal in society, men are still seen as the breadwinner of the household but not in every situation; in some women are the money makers and support their family. â€Å"Isabella writes of Heathcliff arousing terror in her like â€Å"a tiger , or venomous serpent.†(pp49, 181) Many relationships have a problem on one or both sides with jealousy, one partner is jealous of their partner or what they do. The relationships in shakespeare s era had these problems, some were more known of than others. Relationships in our century have many different problems but jealousy ties in with many of them. Jealousy can kill and strangle a relationship turning the partners against each other. Jealousy will cause insecurity, mistrust and more problems that lead to downfall.
